“Forgiven” is how we talk. It is how God talks to us in his Word, how God talks through us in love, and how we talk to God. THIS is our mission.
How God talks to us.
The conversation always begins with God. He comes to us: “he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:2) and “the word became flesh” (John 1:14).
“Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having FORGIVEN us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:12-14)
How God talks through us.
God’s love flows down to us and then overflows from us out to our neighbor. “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19). His love is one-way.
“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has FORGIVEN you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:12-15)
How we talk to God.
While God talks to us in His Word and through us to our neighbor, we also talk to God in prayer daily, praying his words back to Him.
“Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have FORGIVEN our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’ For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6:9-15)
“Forgiven” is our mission.
God is sending us out to declare the forgiveness of sins, fully provided in Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection—given FOR YOU.
“Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.’ And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are FORGIVEN them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.’” (John 20:19-23)
And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:33-34)
