Prayer

What should prayer look like?

Prayer is very special to Christianity and is something God has commanded us to do, yet it is a gift Christians can take part in together. Prayer can look different throughout someone's day, along with the content of the prayer. Someone can do prayer individually, as a group, or corporately. As Christians, prayer should be intertwined in their day from the morning when you rise to the evening before bed. Starting the day in prayer is a time to set your mind straight with God's Word since "this is the day the Lord has made." Prayer should also be done with others in fellowship as one body of Christ. Prayer unites us and should not be forced, yet done freely in love. Another piece of prayer is knowing God's Word because the more knowledge we hold of the Bible and the more often we pray through Psalms we will become more affluent in our faith. God's Word is what He has revealed to us, and we must be careful not just to pick out individual passages but to look at it all as a unit. Prayer will look different as it could be a time of rejoicing and thankfulness, but it also brings your fears and unknown to God for His guidance and for you to have a changed heart.

Why Is Prayer Important?

Prayer is essential in the Christian life in more ways than one. First, God asks us to have an intimate relationship with Him. In prayer, there are two voices, one being your voice and the other being God's speaking to you through His Word. Prayer is our response to what Christ did on the cross for us in order to save us from our sins. In that prayer, we remember what He did and the response of thankfulness and rejoicing. We also have  prayer to change our hearts about what is going on in our life. Ultimately, we don't have the power to heal or change people, but God does, and we come to Him through prayer. Prayer transforms our hearts when the Lord reveals what He wants us to know at that time. If we want to have a relationship with our loving Father, we need to be in His Word daily to see how He did work and see how He is currently working.

Prayer in My Life

Over the past year and a half, I have been at Bible college; my prayer life has immensely changed. Before coming to school, I was not as confident in my prayers, especially when I would pray out loud. Now going through school and being surrounded by other believers, I have many opportunities to pray, which has helped me keep praying. Even if I don't feel as though I know what to say or repeat myself, I am becoming more comfortable with prayer. I need to get over my fear and experience prayer as to how I can be in a relationship with the Lord. I have also learned a lot from my friends, professors, and books. I have learned how people pray in different ways and why it should be treasured and exercised as often as possible. Prayer is a special piece of a relationship with God as a Christian.
